What is Clinical Pilates?
Clinical Pilates is a therapeutic aspect of Pilates used by physiotherapists in the rehabilitation of people with pathology. Clinical Pilates allows physical exercise to be associated with physical therapy, providing specialized training geared to the patient’s needs.
The exercises work several muscle groups simultaneously and focus on the muscles of the Center (core or powerhouse: set of abdominal muscles, diaphragm, pelvic floor and buttocks).
Clinical Pilates exercises can be performed on devices (Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda and Spine Corrector) or on the Mat, using only a mattress.
What is Clinical Pilates indicated for?
Clinical Pilates has indications very similar to those of Physiotherapy:
- Rehabilitation of injuries to muscles, tendons and ligaments, fractures and rehabilitation of orthopedic surgeries. It also includes sports injuries in amateur and professional athletes
- Central neurological lesions (strokes and spinal cord injuries) and peripheral ones, head trauma, spinal injuries (namely disc hernias), Multiple Sclerosis, ALS, Ankylosing Spondylitis, among others
- Asthma, oncological diseases, cardiac and abdominal surgery rehabilitation
- Pre and postpartum, stress incontinence, urgency and mixed and diseases related to the pelvic floor.
How is a Clinical Pilates session on SHIFT CARE?
Clinical Pilates sessions are usually held in 2 phases:
- Assessment: At the beginning of the session, a quick assessment is carried out to collect clinical data, signs and symptoms described by the patient, as well as an assessment of posture;
- Intervention: The following are breathing exercises and activation of the core muscles to correct the breathing pattern. Next, exercise sequences are performed on the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda, Spine Corrector or other devices. These sequences are performed in a slow and controlled manner and adapted to each person, depending on the pathology, symptoms and well-being of the patient. The emphasis is not on quantity, but quality of movement: few repetitions of each exercise are performed, with a focus on technique and execution.
The sessions will take approximately 50 minutes.
